Lab Services

Chemistry

Routine chemistry tests are performed 24 hours a day, every day. The chemistry laboratory provides testing in:

  • General chemistry
  • Toxicology
  • Therapeutic drug monitoring
  • Blood gases
  • Electrolytes
  • Endocrinology (hormone levels)
  • Specialist stat testing to support critical care and emergency services

Coagulation Testing

Full range of testing the body’s ability to stop bleeding (hemostasis) is available. Routine testing for anticoagulant therapy is offered 24 hours a day, every day. Special testing performed daily as needed as well. Hypercoagulability testing performed once a week on Sundays.

Cytology (cytopathology)

Lab operates Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Our team works with our cytopathologists to diagnose benign processes, precancerous lesions, cancer and certain infectious organisms on a microscopic cellular level. The cytology department:

  • Analyzes pap ‘smears’ and cells collected from other body sites
  • Tests for Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Attends certain scoped procedures at Springfield Memorial Hospital (SMH) to ensure enough specimen is collected for adequate testing

Flow Cytometry

Flow cytometry most commonly monitors the levels of helper T-cells in HIV patients and can detect leukemia or lymphoma.

Hematology

The study of blood cells (white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets). Tests are performed 24 hours a day, every day. Common tests performed include:

  • Complete blood counts (CBC)
  • Hemoglobin and Hematocrit (H&H)
  • Body fluid cell counts

These tests help diagnose infection and blood disorders including anemia, leukemia and lymphoma.

Histocompatibility

Is the compatibility between the tissues or organs of different individuals, ruling out an immune reaction.

The SMH Lab provides 24-hour on-call support for Transplant Services and the Alan G. Birtch, MD Center for Transplant Services at Memorial.

Donors and recipients are screened and we use this information to help determine the best possible matches to reduce the risk of rejection. The histocompatibility laboratory is certified by the American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI).

Histology

The study of tissues using microscopes. Lab operates 4:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Frozen section is performed 24 hours a day, every day. This study is often used for:

  • Diagnosing disease and determining best treatment options
  • Education
  • Forensic investigations
  • Autopsies

Immunology/Molecular Lab

Helps to diagnose, manage and monitor problems with the immune system.

Microbiology/Virology

Tests are performed 24 hours a day, every day. Microbiology and Virology employ the latest technology for bacteriology, mycology, mycobacteriology, virology, parasitology and molecular testing.

Phlebotomy

Obtains multiple blood samples from patients through venipuncture or other methods and submits them to the laboratory for testing. Phlebotomy is performed 24-hours a day, every day.

Surgical Pathology

Examines surgical specimens and biopsies submitted by physicians. A pathologist’s interpretation of a biopsy reports a malignant or benign status of a tumor as well as types and stages of cancer.

Transfusion medicine

Tests are performed 24 hours a day, every day. Tests performed:

  • Blood typing
  • Antibody screening
  • Cross matching
  • Specialist testing for patients with anemia or severe blood loss
  • Matching tests for transfusions

Blood products prepared by Transfusion Services include red blood cells (RBCs), plasma, platelets and cryoprecipitate.
