Taylorville Memorial Hospital Foundation is pleased to announce they are accepting scholarship applications for the John H. Butterfield Agriculture and Nutrition Scholarship. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student who has graduated from a central Illinois high school with priority given to a Christian County resident. Applicants must be enrolled in a two or four year college or university and have the intention to pursue a career in agriculture or food nutrition.
John H. Butterfield spent a lifetime promoting agriculture in Illinois and around the world. He was raised on a farm in Christian County. After receiving a degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois, he taught high school mathematics for several years before working as an appraiser for the Farm Credit Administration. He returned to the family farm in 1940. In addition to grain farming, he was actively involved with the American Soybean Association and both the National Corn Growers and Feed Grain Council. A strong advocate for soil conservation, he served for many years on the local and state Advisory Conservation Board. John and his wife Carolyn especially enjoyed traveling around the world to observe and learn about farming practices in other countries.
“The scholarship was established by the Butterfield family to honor their father for his years of hard work and dedication to agriculture,” says Raedena Ryan, executive director of the Taylorville Memorial Hospital Foundation. “Awarding this scholarship to a young person preparing for a career in agriculture or nutrition exemplifies John’s life-long interest in education.”
The 2018 recipient will be awarded their scholarship and honored at the Foundation’s Signature Event “Gifts of the Season” on Saturday, December 1, 2018.
