Flu season is starting early in many parts of the country. Memorial Health is encouraging central Illinois residents to get their annual flu shots now, before the flu begins spreading locally.
For most people, September and October are recommended months to receive a flu vaccination. It takes about two weeks for the body to develop protective antibodies following vaccination, so getting vaccinated now can help provide protection as flu season gets underway. Flu vaccination can also reduce the risk of flu illness, hospitalization and serious complications.
“Getting your flu shot early gives your body time to build protection before flu season picks up,” said Ted Clark, MD, and chief clinical officer for Memorial Health. “It’s a simple step you can take to help protect yourself and those around you.”
Memorial Health offers a convenient drive-thru option in Springfield. Flu vaccinations are available for children and adults at the Memorial Drive-Thru Lab, 2950 S. Sixth St., Springfield, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
Additional Saturday clinics are scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 10 and Oct. 31. Flu vaccines also are available at Memorial Care clinic sites.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends annual flu vaccination for people 6 months and older, with rare exceptions.
