Public Invited to Join Sangamon and Menard County Trick or Trek Wellness Challenge Throughout October

9/16/2026

Springfield Memorial Hospital is inviting residents throughout Sangamon and Menard counties to participate in the free Trick or Trek Wellness Challenge, a month-long community wellness event running Oct. 1–31, 2026.

Pamela McGowan, 74, participated in the May Mindful Miles walking challenge and appreciated the opportunity to be intentional about moving more regularly.

“Retirement slows you down, and you need to put yourself on an exercise schedule,” she said. “I lost weight, my A1C numbers came down, and I slept so much better! I look forward to doing more challenges.”

The October challenge encourages participants of all ages and fitness levels to stay active while enjoying the fall season. Eligible wellness activities include walking, running and hiking. Wheelchair users are welcome. Participants can complete activities wherever and whenever it is convenient while tracking cumulative miles through the free Pacer app.

Participants can register online at https://www.mypacer.com/organizations/SMHWALKS/invite and use a cellphone or sync a smartwatch to record their miles with the app. Those who log 100 or more miles during October will receive a commemorative long-sleeved Trick or Trek Wellness Challenge T-shirt.

"The Trick or Trek Wellness Challenge is a fun way to improve your health and enjoy the beautiful fall scenery in our communities," said Galia Cossyleon, community health consultant. “It’s a perfect activity whether you're participating solo, with family members, coworkers, friends or with a neighborhood group.”
