A free cooking class “From Peel to Plate: Reducing Food Waste One Bite at a Time” will be offered from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 17 at Taylorville Memorial Hospital in partnership with the University of Illinois Extension office.
Participants will learn simple ways to cut food waste, store food safely and understand what expiration dates really mean. Lisa Peterson, MS, Nutrition & Wellness Extension Educator, will also share tips on how to use ingredients from root to stalk and stretch your grocery budget without sacrificing flavor. Learn how to make the most of the food you bring home. Participants will roll up their sleeves in the kitchen and try recipes that put every part of the plant to work, including broccoli tots and air-fried Buffalo broccoli stems.
The class will take place in classroom 1413 at TMH. Registration is required: https://go.illinois.edu/TMHFoodWaste. Parking is available in Lot 4 located at the rear of the hospital, next to the meeting room.
On the most recent Community Health Needs Assessment survey, Christian County residents indicated a need for more nutrition education and accessibility of healthy foods. These classes are one way TMH is helping meet that need.
