Casie Milner, a nurse manager in the Emergency Department at Springfield Memorial Hospital (SMH), received the Patriot Award from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, an office established in 1972 under the Department of Defense.
The award is given to a supervisor or manager who makes a special effort to support a working National Guard or Reserve member with flexible scheduling, time off before and after deployment, care for families, and if necessary, leaves of absence.
Paul Stoltzenburg, an emergency medical technician at SMH, nominated Milner and appreciates not only her willingness to be flexible with his schedule as an active military member but also her support in other aspects of his role.
“As a medic in the National Guard, I have to continue my education to maintain my certificates. Casie consistently informs me of classes provided by the hospital to further my education,” Paul said. “Casie goes above and beyond to make sure that I am always prepared to do my job both in the military and on the civilian side. She also utilizes my experience to help precept newer employees here in the Emergency Department.”
Stoltzenburg has served in the Illinois Army National Guard for 11 years.
