She earned bachelor of science degrees in biochemistry and life sciences from the University of British Columbia and a bachelor of science in nursing degree from the British Columbia Institute of Technology, both in Vancouver, Canada. She attended medical school at Avalon University School of Medicine in Curacao and Washington University of Health and Science in Belize before serving a residency in family medicine at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield.
