Decatur Memorial Hospital Nurse Honored with DAISY Award

10/10/2022

Fleming, of Shelbyville, has worked at Decatur Memorial Hospital since 2021. She is a licensed practical nurse in surgical nursing services at the nonprofit hospital.

In the nomination form for her DAISY Award, Fleming’s nominator wrote, “Shelby stayed after her shift to brush out a patient's hair who was unable to do it herself. She shampooed and conditioned the patient's hair, then put it in a braid to help prevent further tangles. Shelby went above and beyond to care for this patient.”

The nonprofit DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died from complications of an autoimmune disease. They were inspired to create the DAISY Award because of the care nurses provided to Barnes and his family during his illness.
