Springfield Memorial Hospital is a 500-bed teaching hospital that serves as a primary teaching site for the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (SIU-SOM). Springfield Memorial Hospital also serves as a pharmacy teaching site for the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy (SIUE-SOP), and also precepts students from Midwestern University-Downers Grove and St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Springfield Memorial Hospital is a designated Magnet hospital for nursing, a Bariatric Center of Excellence, a Kidney Transplant Center, Regional Cancer Center, Level 1 Trauma Center, Regional Burn Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center. In addition, Springfield Memorial Hospital is known for general surgery, orthopedic surgery, cardiac services, critical care services, renal services, maternity services, psychiatric and rehabilitative services. The Pharmacy Department utilizes an advanced robotic dispensing system which allows unit-based pharmacists to provide a wide variety of clinical pharmacy services.
PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program
Springfield Memorial's PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program builds upon the Doctor of Pharmacy Degree education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY-2) Pharmacy residency training.
The resident will actively participate in departmental and institutional committees, complete a major residency project, present project results at a regional conference and provide continuing education for practicing pharmacists. Residents will also precept students from SIUE School of Pharmacy throughout the year.

If selected for an on-site interview, the applicant will be required to give a brief presentation as part of the interview process.
Licensure: Illinois licensure is required by Sept. 1 of the residency year.

Requirements for Completion
Upon successful completion of all program requirements and compliance with all conditions of the residency program, the resident shall
be awarded a certificate of completion. Requirements include but are not limited to:
- 85 percent or more of their goals and objectives as achieved for residency (ACHR) and all other goals and objectives marked as “satisfactory progress” or “achieved”
- Satisfactory completion of all assignments by preceptors and Residency Program Director
- Successful completion of a one-hour continuing education program for practicing pharmacists
- Poster presentation at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Midyear Clinical Meeting or approved equivalent
- A medication use evaluation (MUE) or equivalent
- An analysis of adverse drug events (ADEs)
- A newsletter or equivalent for hospital colleagues
- A major research project presented at the Great Lakes Pharmacy Resident Conference or approved equivalent
- Attendance at one state or national health system pharmacy meeting in addition to Midyear.
- Staffing requirements
- Completion of a manuscript suitable for publication for the resident’s research project
