Their backgrounds are unique, but Phil Sallee and John Cox share a common interest – the desire to make a difference.
A retired biologist from the Illinois State Police Crime Lab, Sallee has volunteered at JMH for six years now. He volunteers as a messenger for Memorial Pain Clinic. “I love the opportunity to do something useful,” he said. “My favorite part is interacting with staff.”
Cox is retired from the U.S. Air Force and MacMurry College, where he taught social work. At JMH, he works in the Emergency Department, greeting people and providing a calming presence as well as a wheelchair when necessary. “I feel privileged to be able to volunteer at JMH,” he said. “Their reputation as a small, community hospital is excellent, and I feel honored to be part of their organization.”
“The opportunity to work as a team with volunteers and hospital staff helping patients and visitors is richly rewarding!” Cox added. “Helping those in need is a great way to give back to our community.”
These two men are among the many volunteers at JMH.
“We are so thankful for our volunteer team,” said Pam Martin, executive director of the Jacksonville Memorial Foundation and Volunteers. “They always bring the smiles, and they help out wherever we need them.”
The hospital is in the midst of recruiting additional volunteers for 2024. Memorial Health hospital volunteers go through training and orientation. Volunteers at JMH are currently in high demand in rehabilitation services, the JMH Auxiliary Gift Shop and as patient transporters.
