The Taylorville Memorial Foundation recently announced the winners of the Carolyn M. Butterfield Trust Nursing Scholarship, the John H. Butterfield Agriscience and Nutrition Scholarship and the Dr. George Ferry Memorial Scholarships.
“We are fortunate to have generous donors who invest in the continuing education of area students through gifts to the Taylorville Memorial Foundation,” said Kim Bourne, president and CEO of Taylorville Memorial Hospital. “We appreciate that they recognize the importance of supporting and hopefully retaining the best and brightest young people in our communities.”
The following graduate students were named scholarship award winners:
- Kallie Havera received a $1,000 Carolyn M. Butterfield Trust Nursing Scholarship toward her pursuit of a nursing degree at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
- Abigail Erlenbush received a $1,000 John H. Butterfield Agriscience and Nutrition Scholarship toward her pursuit of a degree in animal science and ag communications at Illinois State University in Normal.
- Alivia Kent and Aulona Letniku
each received a $2,500 Dr. George Ferry Memorial Scholarship. Kent is pursuing a nursing degree from Illinois State University in Normal while Letniku is working toward a biological sciences degree from DePaul University in Chicago.
As a charter member of the St. Vincent Memorial Hospital Foundation (now the Taylorville Memorial Foundation), Carolyn Butterfield understood the importance of a rural hospital. Through a trust, she provided an endowment that funds annual scholarships. She wanted to financially assist Christian County students who pursue a career in health care, especially in the field of nursing.
The John H. Butterfield Agriscience and Nutrition Scholarship is awarded to a student who has graduated from a central Illinois high school, with priority given to a Christian County resident, and has completed the first year in an agriscience or food nutrition program at a two- or four-year college or university.
The Dr. George Ferry Memorial Scholarships are awarded each spring to Taylorville High School graduates planning a career in healthcare. The family of Dr. George Ferry and Taylorville Memorial Foundation administer these scholarships.
