Free Skin Cancer Screenings Available for Local Residents

5/8/2024

Free skin cancer screenings will be available from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, at SIU Simmons Cancer Institute in Springfield.

The free screenings are provided by the Regional Cancer Partnership, which includes Memorial Health, SIU Medicine and Springfield Clinic. Participants must be 18 or older and not currently under the care of a dermatologist.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and one in five Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime.

“Everyone is at risk for skin cancer, but there are ways to manage that risk,” said Tia Rapps, Memorial Health community cancer education coordinator. “Reduce your exposure to UV light by avoiding indoor tanning beds and wear sunscreen and protective clothing when you go outside. Regular skin self-exams, as well as screenings by a doctor, can help detect warning signs of skin cancer early.”

Registration is required. To register, call 217-545-6122, or email simmons@siumed.edu.
