Dear Friends,

Thank you for your continued support of the Taylorville Memorial Foundation. This Community Update provides brief highlights from the past year and our partnership with you to improve lives and build stronger communities through better health.

Patient care: We were thrilled when a local business debuted a brand new CUPS fundraiser that will benefit women through our Mammography Patient Assistance Fund.

Education: Your generosity helped our colleagues with continuing education and professional certifications. Check out the story on Ryan Pavolka and his important work researching ways to reduce sepsis infections.

Community health: Memorial’s mission to improve lives and build stronger communities through better health means the Foundation extends our efforts beyond the hospital campus, too. Read on for details about how we invest in our community partners and their health and wellness goals from vaping education in our junior high to fire department equipment for grain bin rescues to diabetes management and prevention programming at the YMCA to raised beds in our community garden – and more.

Donor highlights: Besides funding the Dr. George Ferry Memorial Scholarship at Taylorville Memorial Hospital, longtime donors Dr. John and Susan Ferry provided funds for lunch for Acute Care and a cookie break for all colleagues in appreciation for the excellent service and support they provide our community. They have also included the Foundation in their estate planning, which will benefit our community’s healthcare environment for generations to come.

These are just a few of the many ways your donations make a difference within the Foundation. Our community health programming continues to help fund other important health-related projects in Christian County. We also invest in medical technologies and provide educational grants for the next generation of healthcare leaders – all a result of generous financial gifts from community members.

It was exciting last year to move forward on many fronts, and we eagerly anticipate this year’s important work as well. We will continue to collaborate with our community, and we thank you for your support. Your generous contributions make our work possible.

Cheryl Morman and Charlee Kocurek, co-owners of Designed with Detail, wanted to inspire the community to come together in a fun way to raise awareness and support women’s health during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

They challenged individuals and businesses to design bras in an official “CUPS” competition, and the entries showcased creativity, humor and an enthusiastic commitment to support women’s breast health. The competition raised $750 that went to the foundation’s efforts to pay for underinsured women to receive free mammograms.

“Too many women put themselves and their health on the backburner,” Morman said. “With the funding support, we hope women will be more apt to get the medical attention they need without feeling they are taking away from their families and other necessities. This was Designed with Detail’s first year for the event, and we hope to continue and raise even more next year!”

In 2022, the Taylorville Memorial Foundation supported seven women with more than $4,500 distributed through the CUPS program. The CUPS fund began in 2011 when a group of area women banded together to help a friend and then decided to formalize their efforts with a fund. Since CUPS was established in 2011, nearly $75,000 has been distributed in support of mammography assistance.

Lean Six Sigma Project Will Impact Patient Health

The Foundation funded a colleague’s Lean Six Sigma training in 2022 that has potential to improve sepsis patient outcomes. Ryan Pavolka, Emergency Preparedness and Environmental Safety Coordinator at Taylorville Memorial Hospital, spearheads the project in the hospital’s Emergency Department as part of his Lean Six Sigma training. Once he completes his research and data analysis, Pavolka’s project will impact specific processes associated with sepsis care delivery models.

“Sepsis is a life-threatening medical condition caused by infections, and it is critical that patients with these conditions are recognized quickly and provided appropriate treatment within the defined scope of medicine,” said Kelly Hill, director of operations improvement for Memorial Health, who oversees Pavolka’s project. Ultimately, Pavolka’s project aims to save lives, which makes financially supporting his work an exciting use of Foundation donor dollars.

Supporting Student Health

Vaping Prevention

All sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students at TJHS attended four sessions of the “Catch My Breath” vaping prevention program. Nearly 500 students learned about the harmful effects of e-cigarette use as well as strategies to stand up to peer pressure. Students who wished to quit vaping were also provided the resources to do so. The program was so successful it received The Community Project Award from the Illinois Critical Access Hospital Network (ICAHN), which recognizes hospitals that implement projects to strengthen and improve the well-being of their communities.

“We are proud that our work to reduce vaping among young people has been recognized by the ICAHN,” said Darin Buttz, TMH director of community health. “Lung health was identified as a top community health priority, and the work we’re doing with these students has the potential to prevent lung disease and other serious health problems in the decades to come.” More than 92% of students who completed the “Catch My Breath” program said in a survey that they were less likely to vape as a result of what they’d learned.

Encouraging Healthy Food Choices

A $32,442 grant from the Taylorville Memorial Foundation covered the cost of purchasing 234 dozen reusable white trays to accommodate the district’s 2,300 K-12 students as well as faculty and staff members. In addition, the grant provided a warm food display case and a grab-and-go cooler at the junior high school and at the high school.

“Our project involves healthy upgrades of the items offered at the school’s café, and we’re serving those foods to students on fresh, white reusable serving trays,” said Dr. Chris Dougherty, superintendent of Taylorville CUSD3, referencing national and locally conducted research that suggests students more often choose healthy foods when their selections are presented on a white plate.

Other Community Health Programs

The Foundation’s community health programming assists with funding health-related projects in Christian County.

A $17,500 grant was awarded to restore Manners Park tennis and pickleball courts. According to the Taylorville Park District, the wear and tear on the only public courts in Taylorville rendered the spaces difficult to use – and potentially dangerous prior to restoration.

Nokomis High School health and physical education department was awarded a $1,600 grant that helped purchase a high-tech timing system that provides accurate and immediate timing in different speed-training scenarios. School instructors use the equipment during physical education classes and during a lesson in which students calculate their top running speed in miles per hour.

The Christian County YMCA offered the popular “Lose to Win” program in 2022 due to a Foundation grant. The “Lose to Win” program is an organized weight-loss challenge with a cash prize that involves teams of participants or individuals competing as a team of one.

The Taylorville Community Garden is growing! Thanks to a Foundation grant, the garden now has more raised beds, which provide fresh food given to those in need. The garden is located on the grounds of Davis Memorial Christian Church and is a volunteer effort spearheaded by Jerry and Gerlinda Johnson.

Thanks to Foundation support, the Diabetes Management and Prevention Program returned in 2022 through the Christian County YMCA. The program helps people with diabetes and pre-diabetes to live healthier lives. Classes educate about the disease and the importance of monitoring critical health numbers as well as diet modification and exercise.

A $15,000 investment in farming safety was made by the Foundation to the Taylorville Fire Department, allowing them to purchase equipment necessary to rescue a person trapped inside a grain bin. The grant provided three rope rescue kits, ten personal kits for rescuers, a battery-powered cut-off saw for cutting into bins and three battery-powered light towers to illuminate the interior of the bin during a rescue.

2022 Auxiliary

TMH Auxiliary members have served as advocates for the work of the hospital and provided volunteer hours and gifts of support during nearly 70 years of partnership. In 2022, they held fundraising activities including FORE! TMH Golf/Glow Golf Outing, 13th Annual 5K Fun Run & Walk Turkey Trot, Holiday Basket Raffle and Dave’s Coffee Cake Sales as well as the TMH Gift Shop. A pledge payment in the amount of $10,000 was presented at the FORE! TMH Golf/Glow Golf Outing event in support of their current pledge of $120,000 to the Taylorville Memorial Foundation Medical Technologies Fund to purchase laboratory equipment.

To date, the TMH Auxiliary has donated $1.7 million, making them the hospital’s largest donor!
