Dear Friends,

As I reflect on the last five years, I am so thankful to have served as executive director of the Springfield Memorial Foundation. Whether it is working with our dedicated board, meeting with generous supporters or collaborating with our community partners, I am fortunate to be part of an organization that cares for and about the communities it serves.

Thanks to your generosity in 2022, the Foundation provided health-related grants for our community and training and education for our colleagues.

Some of the 2022 highlights included:

  • More than $700,000 in grants to Memorial Health, SIU School of Medicine, area nursing schools and community organizations
  • Increased funding for Healthcare Careers Education Grants
  • A virtual dissection table to support advanced learning at Health Science Academy at Southeast High School
  • Support and assistance to cancer patients and funding of Sharing Wishes

I invite you to learn more about the impact of the Foundation in our 2022 Community Update. Please enjoy the stories and photos which highlight our work. You may also read an online version of our Community Update, which contains even more highlights from the past year.

Thank you for your continued support. It makes an important difference in the community we call home.

With appreciation,

Melissa Hansen Schmadeke, Executive Director

Brandt Family Supports Healthcare Careers

Members of the Brandt family – founders of BRANDT, Inc., in Springfield – pledged to reach a $1 million milestone in donations to the Springfield Memorial Foundation. That commitment will establish an endowment through the Springfield Memorial Foundation to provide healthcare career education grants to support the future development of the local healthcare workforce. Grants provided through The BRANDT Endowment Fund will help create a pipeline of professional clinical and non-clinical colleagues, ensuring Memorial Health has the workforce needed to continue providing necessary patient care. The generous gift from the Brandt family has the potential to touch thousands of lives across central Illinois.

Generous Donation from Frank and Linda Vala creates Endowed Chair at SIU School of Medicine

Frank and Linda Vala, local business owners and philanthropists, created an Endowed Chair through their generous donation to the Springfield Memorial Foundation. The Endowed Chair honors the medical work of Dr. Bradley Schwartz, director of the Center for Urologic Minimally Invasive Surgery and Endourology at the SIU School of Medicine. Dr. Schwartz specializes in minimally invasive surgery for adrenal disease, both malignant and benign kidney disease, laparoscopy, robotics and stone disease.

Frank and Linda are confident Dr. Schwartz will continue to make advances in medicine while keeping patient care a top priority. The Vala family was fortunate to have Dr. Schwartz as a next-door neighbor for many years, which built a relationship of respect, trust and confidence.

The Valas are dedicated to the advancement of the Springfield community. Their long-time, generous support of many organizations and causes in the community has often been discreet. However, establishing an endowment in their names helps ensure their efforts provide ground-breaking results in healthcare and encourage others to support similar cause.

The couple hope their gift will bring a greater awareness of the outstanding medical hospital and internationally-recognized medical school providing exceptional health care to the citizens of central Illinois.

From the Heart: Donor Story by Dolores Mobley

October 2022

During the last few days of my husband’s life in February 2022, he was able to come home under hospice care, and it was then he gave me a handful of special requests to accomplish on his behalf. One of those requests was to make a donation to help oncology nurses and techs at Springfield Memorial Hospital (SMH).

Mark Mobley

Mark had been diagnosed with melanoma back in August 2020, and we were thankful it was controlled for a year. Unfortunately in August 2021, all havoc broke loose, and a large tumor grew. From September 2021 to February 2022, Mark was in and out of the hospital. During that time, the nurses and techs on the oncology floor at Springfield Memorial Hospital were absolute angels as they cared for him, not only from the cancer but also the many side effects from his treatment. They even knew his favorite flavor of popsicles – orange – and made sure he had them, which made me smile.

After his funeral, I began to work through all the financial and legal “stuff” and looked for a way to fulfill the promises I had made to Mark. I wanted to make a donation for oncology nursing at SMH, but wasn’t sure how to start. A friend of mine, who retired as an oncology nurse, gave me the name of Diane Rutledge on the Memorial Health board of directors, and she put me in touch with Melissa Hansen Schmadeke, the executive director for the Springfield Memorial Foundation.

“Our donation can’t compete with large donations made by families who fund hospital wings,” I explained to Melissa. “But we do want to make a donation that will help those individuals who chose oncology nursing at SMH because they were so special to us and to Mark.”

Even though I have lived in Sangamon County for 37 years, I didn’t really know much about the hospital. We had spent happier times there with the birth of our three children, and I had read newspaper articles about the hospital’s community work. After talking with Melissa, she worked with other staff at the Foundation to create an endowment fund in my husband’s memory. She answered all my questions and helped me better understand how the endowment would work.

My family and I are grateful to the Springfield Memorial Foundation for helping us to honor one of Mark’s last requests. He was so thankful for the care he received from the nursing staff, and so was I. Now we are able to pay it forward.

PATIENT ASSISTANCE FUNDS

Sharing Wishes Milestone

Sharing Wishes reached a milestone by granting 450 wishes! Through the continued support of our generous donors, the Sharing Wishes Fund enabled Lisa to visit Chicago’s Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium. “These lions are the whole reason I wanted to go to the Field Museum. Thank you so much!” she said.

Since its establishment in 2012, the Sharing Wishes Fund has made a significant impact in the lives of many hospice patients and families in central Illinois. Whether it is a special family-and-friends gathering or a visit from a distant loved one, Sharing Wishes grants unique and special wishes to help provide a meaningful touch to the hospice experience for selected patients.

Cancer Patient Assistance

Springfield Memorial Foundation Cancer Patient Assistance Fund helps cancer patients with transportation needs, groceries, rent or other household bills. The need has doubled over the last year.

Annual Grant Program Impacts Community

The annual grant program is at the heart of what we do, and we are proud of the positive impact these funds have on the health and well-being of our community. In 2022, the Springfield Memorial Foundation provided more than $755,103 in grants to fund health-related projects in central Illinois. The funds support programs to improve overall well-being and purchase lifesaving equipment and education materials for our current and future healthcare workers.

GRANTS IN ACTION!

GRANTS IN ACTION!

Springfield Memorial Foundation proudly sponsored the Springfield African American History Society’s summer day camp. The Foundation covered the cost of attendance for all campers this year! Not only did the campers enjoy a field trip and arts and crafts for the week, but they also received backpacks to hold their learning materials. What a joy to see so many smiling faces as the kids enjoyed this fun learning experience!

GRANTS IN ACTION!

A grant from the Springfield Memorial Foundation expanded a hands-on STEM learning program into four middle schools within Springfield School District 186. The $6,100 grant supports Project Lead the Way middle school programming and uses curriculum focused on student career pathways in computer science, engineering and biomedical/health sciences. The Foundation also provided an “Anamotage” table to Southeast High School. The virtual dissection table supports learning for students in the Health Science Academy at Southeast High School.

GRANTS IN ACTION!

The Foundation awarded a grant to Memorial Health Child Care for new, educational outdoor equipment. The grant enhanced the playground for the children of Memorial colleagues by providing a high-quality learning environment with interactive equipment and pretend play structures. If you would like to support Memorial Health Child Care programs or the new facility, please contact the Foundation at foundation@mhsil.com.

GRANTS IN ACTION!

A Foundation grant helped purchase vision and hearing screening equipment for a school contracting with Memorial Care. As a result, an RN with the School Nurse Program and Certified Screener, completed 749 screenings. The service collectively saved the school almost $4,000.

GRANTS IN ACTION!

Memorial’s Rehabilitation Program and Neuroscience Services has a new Restorative Therapies (RT300) Arm and Leg Core iFES Bike thanks to a grant from the Foundation. The bike uses electrical stimulation as a dynamic therapy tool to help treat patients who present with neurological impairments like stroke, brain injuries and cerebral palsy. Incorporating the bike into practice enhances patient care, outcomes recovery and return to functional activities of daily living and independence.

Second Annual Memorial Holiday Fest Delights Public

Memorial Holiday Fest unwrapped its annual holiday gift to the community on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Memorial Holiday Fest, presented by the Springfield Memorial Foundation in partnership with Downtown Springfield, Inc., featured a festive lineup of community events and family activities on Saturdays and Wednesday evenings between Nov. 26 and Dec. 21 in downtown Springfield.

Student-decorated trees were on display at the Illinois State Museum. Students competed in an online “People’s Choice” vote for first, second and third place. The public voted online by visiting Springfield Memorial Foundation’s Facebook page. Continue scrolling to see the student trees below.

Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanza decorations were featured at various locations throughout downtown. New this year was a 10-foot-tall outdoor light display of Abraham Lincoln with Santa Claus at the Old State Capitol Plaza. Highlights included free visits with Santa Claus held at the Old State Capitol and visits with President and Mrs. Lincoln at the Springfield Visitor Center.

“We’re excited we can share Memorial Holiday Fest with our community,” said Melissa Hansen Schmadeke, executive director of the Springfield Memorial Foundation. “Families rediscovered familiar activities and enjoyed exciting new offerings. This inclusive event celebrates the diversity of the holiday season.”

Memorial Transplant Services 5k Run/Walk

The Alan G. Birtch, MD, Center for Transplant Services at Memorial 5K Run/Walk benefiting kidney transplant patients was held Saturday, Sept. 24, at Southwind Park in Springfield after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The annual event returned in time for the transplant program’s 50th anniversary. Proceeds benefit Springfield Memorial Foundation’s Transplant Assistance Fund, which provides assistance to organ transplant patients, education for patients and staff and continuing program development.

“Over the past 16 years of hosting the 5K event, we have been overwhelmed by the support of our community to help us raise funds to assist our patients and their families,” said Valerie Krohe, nurse manager, Acute Dialysis, Apheresis & Transplant Care.

Thank you to our sponsors for their generous donations which helped make the 2022 Alan G. Birtch, MD Center for Transplant Services 5K Walk/Run a success! More than $7,000 was raised toward our Transplant Patient Assistance Fund.

An Inspiring Story from Dr. Lorie Bleyer

I wanted to honor Eric’s memory in ways that would reflect his values and generous spirit. My family set up the Eric and Lorie Bleyer Endowment Fund to continue Eric’s support of Memorial Health. The fund helps all colleagues who desire to enhance their education and advance their healthcare careers in service of our community.

Eric and I started with Memorial Koke Mill in 1999 when the ambulatory group was Healthcare Network Associates. Over the years, Eric was supportive of several of his nurses pursuing RN degrees, sometimes adjusting his schedule to allow them to more easily attend class.

Eric and I tried to support the Foundation over the years as we witnessed the good work it did on many fronts. Through Eric’s involvement on the Medical Executive Committee, he developed close relationships with hospital administrators and other providers. He developed a deep respect for how honorably Memorial pursued its mission.

We have also set up an endowment with SIU School of Medicine, our alma mater, to provide medical student scholarships. Eric’s parents, Bill and Dorothy, modeled a legacy of generosity also supporting scholarships with their own SIU endowment in Carbondale.

I hope this donation will also encourage others to support the Foundation’s work and pray that colleagues will take steps of faith in pursuing fulfilling healthcare careers.
