Dear Friends,

As I reflect on the past year, I am so grateful to have served as executive director of the Lincoln Memorial Foundation. I feel fortunate to work alongside our dedicated board, meet with generous supporters and collaborate with our community partners to fulfill our mission, support the colleagues and patients of Lincoln Memorial Hospital and make Logan County a healthier place for all.

In the following pages, you’ll learn about how the Foundation provided health-related grants for our community, training and education for our colleagues, and advanced medical equipment purchases to ensure the best quality of care for our patients. The Foundation provided more than $130,000 in grants for community initiatives, increased funding for our Healthcare Careers Education Grant Program and assisted in the purchase of new echocardiography lab equipment at LMH. These efforts were made possible by the generosity and compassion of donors like you.

I invite you to learn more about the impact of the Foundation in our 2021-22 Community Update. I hope you enjoy the stories and photos that highlight the important work we do together. You can find even more photos and stories in the online version of this Community Update.

Thank you for your continued support. Please know you truly make a difference in the lives of our patients, our colleagues and the community we call home.

With appreciation,

MOSAIC Project Expands Services

A children’s mental health initiative started in 2017 at Lincoln Junior High School has expanded to include seven elementary schools in Logan County thanks to your generous donations to the Lincoln Memorial Foundation.

The Children’s MOSAIC Project, a community-based partnership between Memorial Behavioral Health (MBH) and local education leaders, embeds counselors within a school where they provide on-site screenings and therapy sessions during school hours.

Although the first MOSAIC program in Logan County launched prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the expansion of the program into seven more schools comes at an important time. In the fall of 2021, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Children's Hospital Association and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry declared an emergency in child and adolescent mental health. The isolation, uncertainty and loss experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic has taken an alarming toll on children.

The timely expansion of MOSAIC services is funded in part by a grant from the Lincoln Memorial Foundation.

“Response has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Jonathan Ponser, LCPC, manager of Behavioral Therapy Services for MBH. “A program like this can be a literal lifeline to kids who struggle with mental health issues and have very limited access to mental healthcare services. We have excellent communication with the schools, and everyone pulls in the same direction to support the needs of each student in the program.”

The MOSAIC – Meaningful Opportunities for Success and Achievement through Service Integration for Children – program’s expansion means program counselors and staff now serve Northwest, Washington-Monroe, Central, West Lincoln-Broadwell, Adams, Chester East Lincoln and New Holland-Middletown elementary schools, in addition to Lincoln Junior High School.

“By eliminating the need for insurance, transportation, copays and time for traditional appointments, we bring the counseling office to the client,” Ponser said. “Parents and educators appreciate the easy access and ability to take advantage of these mental healthcare services without removing a child from school to attend an appointment.”

The Children’s MOSAIC program, said Ponser, helps to normalize topics associated with mental health, including the benefits of counseling and support services. By embedding counselors in schools, where children see them interact with other students, teachers and staff, MOSAIC program leaders hope to impart an important message to students: It’s OK to not feel OK.

“We have been able to engage children and families who were in need of therapy and support, but who did not engage in counseling services,” Ponser said. “We’ve had many success stories that involve young clients struggling with acting-out behavior, anxiety or depression – going untreated, unaddressed – but, through consistent interventions by our embedded counselors, we catch these kids early and provide support to them before their symptoms can progress and create large problems in their lives.”

The program also changes the perception of diagnostic criteria for a specific mental illness. Students don’t have to be mentally ill to need or qualify for therapy.

“We hope students come to accept counseling as something that could be beneficial to them no matter what may or may not be happening in their lives, as opposed to seeing counseling as some mysterious thing reserved for only very sick people,” Ponser said. “I’m so encouraged when I hear from school staff and program therapists and parents about our clients’ noticeable improvements. Through the MOSIAC program, our young people learn strategies to socialize and problem-solve effectively and just be happier in their lives.”

The LMH Market

The Lincoln Memorial Hospital Market opens soon for its eighth season on Saturday, May 20, at the Logan County Fairgrounds in Lincoln. The LMH Market will be open from 8 a.m. until noon Saturdays until Sept. 30 inside the Expo Building.

Funded by the Lincoln Memorial Foundation, the event is a “producer-only” farmers market, meaning all items offered will be homegrown, handmade or vendor-created from locally owned operations.

A “Local Roots” booth will feature local vendors, providing an opportunity for vendors who are not producer-only but who have a local connection and quality product to share with customers.

“We’re very proud The LMH Market has become a wellness destination like no other in Illinois,” said Angela Stoltzenburg, director of community health for Lincoln Memorial Hospital. “The market’s aim is to promote fresh food and healthy living while supporting local farmers and the food-producer economy.”

That makes it an extension of the hospital’s mission to improve lives and build stronger communities through better health, Stoltzenburg said.

The LMH Market offers fruits, vegetables, eggs, poultry, baked goods, honey and more. Free health screenings, also known as “Know Your Numbers,” are held on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month.

“Knowing more about your health status can help reduce your risk of costly health problems and better manage any condition you might have,” Stoltzenburg said.

The Power of Produce Club offers activities for children from 5 to 12 years old to engage them in the local food system with educational games and demonstrations, conversations with farmers and exposure to new fruits and vegetables

“We have a healthy mission at our core. In Logan County, over 43 percent of adults are obese, which causes several unhealthy outcomes for our community,” Stoltzenburg said. “While we have strategies to address obesity underway, The LMH Market increases access to fresh produce. We know it has been proven that thriving farmers markets help improve the health of communities.”

Supporting the Next Generation of Caregivers

Healthcare Career Education Grants are a cornerstone of the Lincoln Memorial Foundation’s work is to help support the next generation of healthcare providers in our community. A strong clinical care pipeline helps ensure LMH is always ready to care for our friends and neighbors. Since 2013, LMF has granted more than $600,000 in grants to members of our community. Awards range from $1,500 for a CNA to $30,000 for a graduate degree. After graduation, these students return to join our workforce at LMH.

The ability to invest in talented future healthcare providers is possible thanks to your generous support of the Healthcare Career Education Grant program. This past year, Lincoln Memorial Foundation awarded more than $29,000 to current employees of Lincoln Memorial Hospital to advance their healthcare-related knowledge.

GRANTS IN ACTION

Lincoln Elementary School District 27 was awarded a grant from the Lincoln Memorial Foundation for a new Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum for their students. Over the past two years, the district has noticed an increase in the need for mental health assistance. The grant supports a SEL program, Capturing Kids’ Hearts, to train faculty and staff to identify and assist students with the problems they are facing. Capturing Kids’ Hearts is an evidence-based program that has been implemented across the district, thanks to the financial support of the Foundation. If you would like to support community health programs and projects, please contact the Foundation at ALMHFoundation@mhsil.com or by calling 217-605-5006.

A Foundation grant helped purchase new Echocardiography equipment for the Lincoln Memorial Hospital Echocardiography Lab in 2022. In the last 8 years, the LMH Echo Lab has grown upwards 417 exams in 2014 to nearly 1,500 exams in 2022. The grant from the Foundation has allowed for a dedicated space to accommodate procedures with a new probe, bed, chairs, and software system. If you would like to support Advanced Medical Equipment purchases, please contact the Foundation at almhfoundation@mhsil.com or by calling 217-605-5006.

The Foundation funded the purchase of bicycles, bike racks and a bicycle fix-it station at the Lincoln Memorial Hospital Wellness Trail in an effort to earn a Bicycle Friendly Business designation from the League of American Cyclists. LMH was awarded that designation in February. Cycling is a low-impact way to improve physical and mental health, and LMH is taking action by welcoming bicycles on campus and encouraging community partners to do the same. Bicycling is a healthy form of active transportation and recreation for our bodies, minds and the environment.

Thanks to generous donor contributions, the Lincoln Memorial Foundation purchased a new building on Broadway Street in downtown Lincoln for The Pink Shutter, a thrift store operated by the Lincoln Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, to call home. The Pink Shutter, currently located on McLean Street, offers quality clothing, housewares, décor and more at a fraction of the price. All proceeds from the store support the Lincoln Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and their initiatives. The Pink Shutter plans to open at their new location in 2023.

EVENTS

Fore! LMH Golf Outing Resumed in 2022

On June 10, 2022, the annual LMH golf outing resumed at the Lincoln Elks golf course after being postponed for two years due to COVID-19. The Fore! LMH Golf Outing provides participants with a way to enjoy a round with friends and, at the same time, support our mission to improve lives and build a stronger community through better health. The 2022 outing included 33 team entries and nearly 50 sponsorships in support from local business entities and community members, which totaled to $22,000 in proceeds. All proceeds from the fundraiser go directly to the Lincoln Memorial Foundation to support community health initiatives.

Save the Date! The 2023 LMH Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 2, 2023.

35th Annual Light Up a Life

Each year, the Light Up a Life campaign invites the community to honor the living, remember those who have passed away or show appreciation for healthcare professionals. Last year, more than 500 families paid tribute to more than 2,000 individuals and raised more than $31,000 to support local health initiatives in Logan and Mason counties.

Did you know that you can give a gift of grain?

Using grain to make a gift to Lincoln Memorial Foundation – which may be designated for the purpose you choose – can be a wonderful way to invest in the future of healthcare while achieving tax savings. For more information, please call the Foundation at 217-605-5006.

Lifetime Giving

The following individuals, families and organizations have preserved the mission of Lincoln Memorial Hospital through cumulative lifetime giving totals of $10,000 or more through December 31, 2022.
