Dear Friend,
Healthcare workers at Jacksonville Memorial Hospital navigate new challenges daily as they keep your families, friends and neighbors safe and healthy. They are dedicated in mission to improve lives and build stronger communities through better health.
Your Jacksonville Memorial Foundation continues to be a vital partner in that mission. The stories in this Community Update represent just a small part of the Foundation’s work to support the hospital’s frontline workers and educate the public through community outreach.
Foundation trustees maintain a strategic focus to help improve the health of local residents, provide financial assistance to patients in need, educate the next generation of healthcare professionals and much more. But this work would not be possible without you. Thank you for your support of the Jacksonville Memorial Foundation and for being an ambassador for our hospital in the community. Please know how much you are valued and appreciated.
The past few years have been full of change and challenges. But our commitment to provide high-quality healthcare, close to home, has not wavered. We hope you’ll take a few minutes to read this report and recognize how your support changes lives and inspires others.

Maurice and Ruby Funk Trust Funds 15 ‘Smart’ Beds for Patients
Thanks to $160,000 in funding from the Maurice and Ruby Funk Trust, fifteen hospital beds in the Transitional Care Unit (TCU) at Jacksonville Memorial Hospital have been replaced with state-of-the-art wireless beds designed to prevent falls and provide increased comfort and safety for both patients and caregivers.
“It is an honor for foundation trustees to be tasked with utilizing the Funk Trust distributions in accordance with their wishes,” said Mary Fergurson, president of the Jacksonville Memorial Foundation board of trustees. “The Maurice and Ruby Funk Trust has funded numerous purchases and renovations over the years that have allowed Jacksonville Memorial Hospital to stay at the forefront of medical technology, especially benefitting our senior patients, whose welfare was so important to this generous couple.”
The new beds also focus on patient comfort and convenience, featuring an integrated bed extender to accommodate taller patients and equipped with a USB port and holder to allow patients to charge and store personal electronic devices. Touchscreens help streamline the processes of clinical staff, and the beds connect wirelessly to the nurse call system. A dashboard at the nurses’ station tracks bed data, including bed configuration and an exit alarm that senses a patient’s weight and alerts nurses if a patient is out of position or has left the bed.
JMH Auxiliary Helps Fund New Equipment for Rapid Lab Results
At their annual May Luncheon last year, the JMH Auxiliary donated $46,000 to JMH to help purchase laboratory equipment that can rapidly detect the pathogens responsible for an infection and help physicians determine best treatment options.
The Verigene system, developed by Luminex, supports rapid decision-making that can help patients at JMH avoid dangerous illnesses and recover sooner from infection. This is especially crucial in light of the growing concern about antibiotic-resistant infections.
“With the Verigene system, the laboratory is able to provide a bacterial identification and give genetic resistance markers within three hours, versus 48-72 with the old method,” said Jamie DeWitt, lead medical technologist.
“By rapidly identifying the bacteria present and giving resistance markers, the physician is able to place a patient on the appropriate antimicrobial therapy sooner. The rapid administration of appropriate antibiotics potentially increases good patient outcome and decreases the patient's stay in the hospital.”
The Verigene platform can be used to analyze infections in the bloodstream, respiratory tract and gastrointestinal tract including pathogens like MRSA that can cause serious illness. The system also reduces potential for human errors, since test results are uploaded directly to the laboratory interface system with no need for typing or transcription. They can then be reviewed immediately by a medical technologist.
Foundation Helps Colleagues Advance Healthcare Career Education
Many JMH colleagues and student nurses received Foundation education grants and funding for advanced certification in specialties like hyperbaric safety, mammography, medical laboratory science and healthcare interpreting.
One funding recipient was Libby Nobis, a supervisor for hyperbaric oxygen therapy medicine and safety. She used a Foundation grant to take two classes and then took the national board test to obtain her hyperbaric technologist certificate.
“I was new to the position that required me to have this certification, and I was very glad to have that resource available,” she said. “Thanks to the class, I better understand hyperbarics and the job requirements; I can make sure everything is done safely and also help train my employees to better understand hyperbaric medicine.”
Donor Purchases Materials for Festive Holiday Pillow Cases for Patients
The volunteer JMH Sewing Ladies group created themed pillow cases to spread cheer for patients this past holiday season with materials purchased by an anonymous donor through the Foundation.
“These pillow cases provide a festive and warm touch to boost patient morale for those staying in the hospital over the holiday season,” said Pam Martin, executive director of Jacksonville Memorial Foundation. “We appreciate the donors who helped us purchase materials for these pillow cases, and we especially thank our Sewing Ladies group for doing such a beautiful job with their seamstress skills.”
Environmental services started using the pillow cases the day after Thanksgiving much to the delight of patients and colleagues alike.
JMH Auxiliary Makes a Difference
Nearly 550 members make up the Jacksonville Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and work to raise funds for the hospital, coordinate colleague appreciation efforts and raise health awareness within the community through volunteer support of screenings, events and other programming. (The purchase of the Verigene system, referenced earlier, was the result of a $46,000 Auxiliary donation.)
“We appreciate the commitment of our members and their passion to support the hospital through our work,” said Debbie Richards, president of the Auxiliary. “We invite others to join us, and we offer many opportunities to serve – in a variety of different areas, depending on your interests.”
- The Auxiliary runs the JMH Gift Shop, which serves hospital patients, visitors and colleagues. Other fundraising efforts that attract community engagement include various raffles, a Fall Fling and Santa’s Breakfast.
- Colleague appreciation is another important area the Auxiliary supports by coordinating Colleague Certification Scholarships, Popcorn Days, seasonal decorating of the hospital and comfort bags for employees who stay overnight.
- The Auxiliary provides volunteers for kidney and dialysis screenings, comfort bears for pediatric patients in the ED and newspapers for patients. They also support the Jacksonville Memorial 5/10 K.
Increasing Access To Healthy Food
A program sponsored by the Jacksonville Memorial Foundation has expanded community access to local, healthy food by allowing people to use Link cards at the Jacksonville Farmers Market. Trustees voted to provide a grant to support access to fresh food for families enrolled in the state’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which supplements the food budgets of families in need.
